The Gift of Encouragement
Every individual possesses special gifts that benefit both themselves and others. These gifts are specific ways we think, feel and act. I recently took a questionnaire that gave me insight into identifying my gifts.
I learned that my most intense gift was that of encouragement. Encouragers are compelled to give advice. They have a strong sense of concern and are sought out as counselors. People find encouragers friendly, understanding and practical.
One of the best opportunities to encourage is through coaching. My passion and interests brought me into the strength and conditioning profession where I am able to use my gift of encouragement. One of the ways I encourage is through fitness, focusing and finishing which make up the Fundamentals of Fitness.
Fitness– I am able to encourage a player to reach his potential through my knowledge of the various fitness components. The athlete needs to be balanced in the following components to reach his potential.
Physical– encourage through hard work which will allow the body to adapt to the strength and conditioning program.
Emotional– meet the athlete where he is and encourage them to work through it. If down after a loss, not playing, injury, etc… point to resources, i.e. chaplain, coach, player development, etc.
Spiritual– encourage to connect with God.
Focus– encourage that the focus is on goals, unity, execution and working hard in the weight room to carry over to the field, classroom or job. Focus on the next game to help them reach their goal. Make sure their “focus is on the right thing.”
Finishing– encourage them to complete the job, reps and sets. Finish the lift of the week. Finishing what you start carries over to practice and playing.
